Krishna consciousness is a very ancient spiritual path that originates in India. It’s teachings have been passed down through an unbroken line of spiritual masters for over 5,000 years.
Krishna consciousness was first brought to the west by such a spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, in 1965. Prior to Srila Prabhupada’s travelling out of India, it was not believed possible that western people would be able to accept and understand this very deep philosophy, however, Srila Prabhupada surprised not only India, but the world by his successful transplanting of pure Vaisnava culture from east to west.
The essential tenet of Krishna consciousness is that the Supreme Truth is not something abstract or impersonal, not a light or a void, but in fact a person - the most beautiful, all-attractive person, whose name is Krishna. One who comes to understand Krishna desires to serve Him, and this service brings the practicioner into a relationship with Krishna which becomes the source of unlimited bliss.
This relationship is not an un-natural imposition upon us, but is actually our inherent nature. We are spirit soul, eternal and indestructible, and therefore our relationship with this temporary material world fails to bring us complete satisfaction. But as soon as we re-awaken our lost relationship with the Supreme in devotional service (or bhakti-yoga) then we are able to find true happiness.
